HOW THE WHALE GOT HIS THROAT
Skąd wieloryb wziął jego = takie gardło
In the sea, once upon a time, O my Best Beloved, there was a Whale (pewnego razu w morzu, o, moi Najdrożsi, żył Wieloryb), and he ate fishes (i zjadał ryby; to eat - jeść). He ate the starfish and the garfish (on zjadł rozgwiazdę i belonę), and the crab and the dab (i kraba, i zimnicę[1]), and the plaice and the dace (i gładzicę, i klenia[2]), and the skate and his mate (i płaszczkę, i jej męża; mate - mąż, małżonek, żona, małżonka; samiec, samica; partner/ka), and the mackereel[3] and the pickerel (i makrelę, i szczupaka), and the really truly twirly-whirly eel[4] (i doprawdy dosłownie poskręcanego węgorza). All the fishes he could find in all the sea (wszystkie ryby, które mógł znaleźć w całym morzu) he ate with his mouth - so (zjadał swoimi ustami - o tak)! Till at last there was only one small fish left in all the sea (aż w końcu w całym morzu została tylko jedna mała rybka), and he was a small 'Stute Fish (i on był = to była mała Sprytna Rybka; astute - chytry, bystry, przebiegły), and he swam a little behind the Whale's right ear (i pływała ona za prawym uchem wieloryba; to swim - pływać; a little behind - "trochę z tyłu = blisko z tyłu, nieco z tyłu"), so as to be out of harm's way (żeby być bezpieczną; out of harm's way - bezpiecznie, daleko od niebezpieczeństwa; harm - szkoda). Then the Whale stood up on his tail and said (wtedy Wieloryb stanął na /swoim/ ogonie i powiedział), 'I'm hungry (jestem głodny).' And the small 'Stute Fish said in a small 'stute voice (a mała Sprytna Rybka powiedziała cienkim sprytnym głosikiem), 'Noble and generous Cetacean, have you ever tasted Man (szlachetny i hojny Waleniu, czy próbowałeś kiedykolwiek Człowieka; cetacean - waleń)?'

'No,' said the Whale (nie - powiedział Wieloryb). 'What is it like (/a/ jaki on jest)?'
'Nice,' said the small 'Stute Fish (smaczny - powiedziała mała Sprytna Rybka). 'Nice but nubbly (smaczny, ale guzkowaty; nubbly - guzkowaty, nierówny; bryłkowaty; w grudkach).'
'Then fetch me some (w takim razie przynieś mi trochę),' said the Whale (powiedział Wieloryb), and he made the sea froth up with his tail (i spienił morze swoim ogonem; to make - zrobić; to froth up - spienić, burzyć, kipieć).

'No,' said the Whale. 'What is it like?'
'Nice,' said the small 'Stute Fish. 'Nice but nubbly.'
'Then fetch me some,' said the Whale, and he made the sea froth up with his tail.
'One at a time is enough (jeden wystarczy),' said the 'Stute Fish (powiedziała Sprytna Rybka). 'If you swim to latitude Fifty North (jeśli dopłyniesz do pięćdziesiątego /stopnia/ północnej szerokości geograficznej), longitude Forty West (do czterdziestego /stopnia/ zachodniej długości) (that is magic (to są czary = to są magiczne słowa)), you will find (znajdziesz), sitting on a raft (siedzącego na tratwie), in the middle of the sea (na środku morza), with nothing on but a pair of blue canvas breeches (bez niczego prócz pary niebieskich płóciennych spodni /na sobie/; canvas - płótno, brezent, kanwa), a pair of suspenders (pary uprzęży[5]) (you must not forget the suspenders, Best Beloved (nie możecie zapominać o uprzęży, moi Najdrożsi)), and a jack-knife (i ze scyzorykiem), one shipwrecked Mariner (jednego Marynarza z rozbitego statku), who, it is only fair to tell you (który, będzie uczciwie ci to powiedzieć), is a man of infinite-resource-and-sagacity (jest człowiekiem nieskończonej zaradności i pomysłowości).
enough [?´n?f], latitude [´l?t?tju?d], longitude [´l?nd??tju?d]
'One at a time is enough,' said the 'Stute Fish. 'If you swim to latitude Fifty North, longitude Forty West (that is magic), you will find, sitting on a raft, in the middle of the sea, with nothing on but a pair of blue canvas breeches, a pair of suspenders (you must not forget the suspenders, Best Beloved), and a jack-knife, one shipwrecked Mariner, who, it is only fair to tell you, is a man of infinite-resource-and-sagacity.
So the Whale swam and swam to latitude Fifty North (i Wieloryb popłynął i płynął do pięćdziesiątego stopnia północnej szerokości geograficznej), longitude Forty West (czterdziestego stopnia zachodniej długości), as fast as he could swim (tak szybko, jak mógł płynąć = jak tylko mógł), and on a raft (i na tratwie), in the middle of the sea (pośrodku morza), with nothing to wear except a pair of blue canvas breeches (bez niczego /do ubrania/ prócz pary niebieskich płóciennych spodni /na sobie/), a pair of suspenders (i uprzęży) (you must particularly remember the suspenders, Best Beloved (musicie pamiętać zwłaszcza o uprzęży, Najdrożsi)), and a jack-knife (i ze scyzorykiem), he found one single, solitary shipwrecked Mariner (znalazł jednego jedynego samotnego Marynarza z rozbitego statku), trailing his toes in the water (zanurzającego /swoje/ palce u nóg w wodzie; trail - ciągnąć, powłóczyć)). (He had his mummy's leave to paddle, or else he would never have done it because he was a man of infinite-resource-and-sagacity (miał pozwolenie od mamy = jego mamusia pozwoliła mu chlupać /nogami/ w wodzie, w przeciwnym razie on by nigdy tego nie zrobił, bo był człowiekiem nieskończonej zaradności i pomysłowości).)
pair [p??], particularly [p?´t?kjul?l?], infinite [´?nf?n?t]
So the Whale swam and swam to latitude Fifty North, longitude Forty West, as fast as he could swim, and on a raft, in the middle of the sea, with nothing to wear except a pair of blue canvas breeches, a pair of suspenders (you must particularly remember the suspenders, Best Beloved), and a jack-knife, he found one single, solitary shipwrecked Mariner, trailing his toes in the water. (He had his mummy's leave to paddle, or else he would never have done it because he was a man of infinite-resource-and-sagacity.)
Then the Whale opened his mouth back and back and back (/i/ wtedy Wieloryb otworzył = zaczął otwierać swoją paszczę /cofając górną szczękę/ do tyłu i do tyłu, i do tyłu) till it nearly touched his tail (aż prawie dotknęła ona[6] jego ogona), and he swallowed the shipwrecked Mariner (i połknął Marynarza z rozbitego statku), and the raft he was sitting on (i tratwę, na /której/ siedział), and his blue canvas breeches (i jego niebieskie płócienne spodnie), and the suspenders (i uprząż) (which you must not forget (o której nie możecie zapominać)), and the jack-knife (i scyzoryk) - He swallowed them all down into his warm, dark, inside cupboards (połknął to wszystko w głąb swojej ciepłej, ciemnej, wewnętrznej szafy), and then he smacked his lips - so (a potem cmoknął /wargami/ - o tak; to smack one's lips - cmokać wargami), and turned round three times on his tail (i obrócił się trzy razy na /swoim/ ogonie).
touch [t?t?], swallow [´sw?l?u], cupboard [´k?b?d]
Then the Whale opened his mouth back and back and back till it nearly touched his tail, and he swallowed the shipwrecked Mariner, and the raft he was sitting on, and his blue canvas breeches, and the suspenders (which you must not forget), and the jack-knife - He swallowed them all down into his warm, dark, inside cupboards, and then he smacked his lips - so, and turned round three times on his tail.
But as soon as the Mariner (ale jak tylko Marynarz), who was a man of infinite-resource-and-sagacity (który był człowiekiem nieskończonej zaradności i pomysłowości), found himself truly inside the Whale's warm, dark, inside cupboards (znalazł się faktycznie w środku ciepłej, ciemnej, wewnętrznej szafy Wieloryba), he stumped and he jumped (chwiał się i skakał = zachwiał się i skoczył) and he thumped and he bumped (i bił, i pchał = zaczął bić i pchać), and he pranced and he danced (i bryknął, i zatańczył), and he banged and he clanged (i walił, i brzęczał), and he hit and he bit (i uderzał, i gryzł = zaczął uderzać i gryźć), and he leaped and he creeped[7] (i skoczył, i pełzał), and he prowled and he howled (i myszkował, i zawył), and he hopped and he dropped (i podskakiwał, i spadał = i zaczął podskakiwać, i spadać), and he cried and he sighed (i krzyknął, i westchnął), and he crawled and he bawled (i czołgał się, i krzyknął), and he stepped and he lepped (i kroczył, i skoczył), and he danced hornpipes where he shouldn't (i zatańczył matelota[8], gdzie nie powinien; hornpipes - matelot /taniec marynarski/), and the Whale felt most unhappy indeed (i Wieloryb poczuł się bardzo nieszczęśliwy). (Have you forgotten the suspenders (/nie/ zapomnieliście o uprzęży)?)
